Timor's Momentum: Confidence http://www.momentum.tl/en/index.html |
I think it is about time for a check-in on Timorese news:
Malaysian Police Officers say goodbye http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/missions/past/unmit/ |
- UN troop withdrawal: a sign of success for Timor-Leste. On December 31, 2011, the UN peacekeeping mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) ended. There were numerous stories about the island nation's enormous transition in the last decade, including via the UN and the US Congress. But my favorite site is the UN/Timorese site, "Momentum: Timor-Leste Forges a Vibrant Future."
- Meanwhile, the organization I worked with there, Seeds of Life, has been exploring ways to better-incorporate nutrition into their program. Here is Seeds of Life's story about nutritionist Jessica Fanzo's time in Timor and her thoughts for the program. Meanwhile, Jessica Fanzo does a great job describing the challenge and hope of Timor.
- What have the main players in Timor's political sphere been up to? Well, former President Jose Ramos-Horta was recently named the UN special envoy to Guinea-Bissau, where he will attempt to make some sense out of the narcotics hub there. Meanwhile, the incumbent Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmao, is doing everything in the country except directing traffic. No, wait, that too.
